¡Ay de los que viven tranquilos en Sión y de los que viven confiados en el monte de Samaria! ¡Ay de los notables de la nación más importante, a quienes acude el pueblo de Israel! 2 Pasen a Calné y obsérvenla; vayan de allí a Jamat la grande, bajen luego a Gat de los filisteos. ¿Acaso son ustedes superiores a estos reinos, o es más grande su territorio que el de ustedes? 3 Ustedes creen alejar el día de la desgracia, pero están acercando el imperio de la violencia. 4 Ustedes que se acuestan en camas incrustadas de marfil y se arrellanan en divanes; que comen corderos selectos y terneros engordados; 5 que, a la manera de David, improvisan canciones al son de la cítara e inventan instrumentos musicales; 6 que beben vino en tazones y se perfuman con las esencias más finas sin afligirse por la ruina de José, 7 marcharán a la cabeza de los desterrados, y así terminará el banquete de los holgazanes.
8 El Señor omnipotente jura por sí mismo; esto afirma el Señor Dios Todopoderoso:
«Yo detesto la arrogancia de Jacob; yo aborrezco sus fortalezas; por eso entregaré la ciudad al enemigo, con todo lo que hay en ella».
9 Sucederá que, si en una casa quedan diez hombres con vida, todos morirán. 10 Y, cuando vengan a la casa para levantar los cadáveres y quemarlos, algún pariente le preguntará a otro que ande en la casa: «¿Queda alguien más contigo?» Y aquel le responderá: «No». Entonces le dirá: «¡Cállate! No vayamos a mencionar el nombre del Señor».
11 Mira, el Señor da la orden de golpear la casa grande hasta hacerla añicos y de hacer trizas la casa pequeña.
12 ¿Acaso galopan los caballos por las rocas o se ara en estas con bueyes? Pero ustedes han convertido el derecho en veneno, y en amargura el fruto de la justicia. 13 Ustedes se regocijan por la conquista de Lo Debar y agregan: «¿No fue con nuestras propias fuerzas como nos apoderamos de Carnayin?»
14 «Por tanto, pueblo de Israel, voy a levantar contra ti a una nación que te oprimirá desde Lebó Jamat hasta el torrente del Arabá», afirma el Señor, el Dios Todopoderoso.

Woe to the Complacent
Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come! 2 Go to Kalneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours? 3 You put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of terror. 4 You lie on beds adorned with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves. 5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments. 6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. 7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.
The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel
8 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself—the Lord God Almighty declares:
“I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”
9 If ten people are left in one house, they too will die. 10 And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11 For the Lord has given the command, and he will smash the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.
12 Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness— 13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, “Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?”
14 For the Lord God Almighty declares, “I will stir up a nation against you, Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.”
