Liberación de Jeremías
La palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías después de que Nabuzaradán, el comandante de la guardia, lo había dejado libre en Ramá. Allí lo había encontrado Nabuzaradán preso y encadenado, entre todos los cautivos de Judá y Jerusalén que eran deportados a Babilonia. 2 El comandante de la guardia tomó aparte a Jeremías, y le dijo: «El Señor tu Dios decretó esta calamidad para este lugar, 3 y ahora el Señor ha cumplido sus amenazas. Todo esto les ha pasado porque pecaron contra el Señor y desobedecieron su voz. 4 No obstante, hoy te libero de las cadenas que te sujetan las manos. Si quieres venir conmigo a Babilonia, ven, que yo te cuidaré. Pero, si no quieres, no lo hagas. Mira, tienes ante tus ojos toda la tierra: ve adonde más te convenga».
5 Como Jeremías no se decidía, Nabuzaradán añadió: «Vuelve junto a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán, a quien el rey de Babilonia ha nombrado gobernador de las ciudades de Judá, y vive con él y con tu pueblo, o ve adonde más te convenga».
Luego el comandante de la guardia le dio provisiones y un regalo, y lo dejó en libertad. 6 Jeremías se fue entonces junto a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, en Mizpa, y se quedó con él, en medio del pueblo que había permanecido en el país.
Asesinato de Guedalías
7 Cuando todos los jefes y soldados del ejército que estaban en el campo se enteraron de que el rey de Babilonia había puesto a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán como gobernador del país, y de que le había confiado el cuidado de hombres, mujeres y niños, así como de los más pobres del país que no habían sido deportados a Babilonia, 8 fueron a Mizpa para presentarse ante Guedalías. Entre ellos estaban: Ismael hijo de Netanías, Johanán y Jonatán hijos de Carea, Seraías hijo de Tanjumet, los hijos de Efay de Netofa, y Jezanías, hijo de un hombre de Macá, y sus hombres. 9 Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán, les hizo este juramento a ellos y a sus tropas: «No teman a los babilonios. Si ustedes se quedan en el país y sirven al rey de Babilonia, les aseguro que les irá bien. 10 Yo me quedaré en Mizpa, para representarlos ante los babilonios que vengan hasta acá. Pero ustedes, comiencen a almacenar en recipientes vino, frutos de verano y aceite, y vivan en las ciudades que han ocupado».
11 Todos los judíos que estaban en Moab, Amón y Edom, y en todos los otros países, se enteraron también de que el rey de Babilonia había dejado un remanente en Judá, y nombrado como gobernador a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán. 12 Entonces todos estos judíos regresaron a la tierra de Judá, de todos los países donde estaban dispersos. Al llegar, se presentaron en Mizpa ante Guedalías, y también almacenaron vino y frutos de verano en abundancia.
13 Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los demás jefes militares que estaban en el campo, se presentaron ante Guedalías en Mizpa, 14 y le dijeron:
—¿No sabes que Balís, rey de Amón, ha mandado a Ismael hijo de Netanías, para matarte?
Pero Guedalías hijo de Ajicán no les creyó. 15 Y allí en Mizpa, Johanán hijo de Carea le propuso en secreto a Guedalías:
—Déjame ir a matar a Ismael hijo de Netanías. ¡Nadie tiene que enterarse! ¿Por qué vamos a permitir que te asesine? Eso causaría la dispersión de todos los judíos que se han reunido a tu alrededor, y acabaría con lo que queda de Judá.
16 Pero Guedalías hijo de Ajicán le respondió a Johanán hijo de Carea:
—¡Ni lo pienses! ¡Lo que dices acerca de Ismael es mentira!

The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon. 2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place. 3 And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him. 4 But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.” 5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.”
Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go. 6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.
Gedaliah Assassinated
7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon, 8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maakathite, and their men. 9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians,” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you. 10 I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.”
11 When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them, 12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.
13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah 14 and said to him, “Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
15 Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, “Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?”
16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”
