Psalm 7 - Columns of Confidence

“O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust…” Psalm 7:1a

The Romans mastered the use of the column. And not only architecturally, but aesthetically. Ionic, Doric, Corinthian; all three columns that not only supported the structure, but did it with style. But regardless of how beautiful and ornate the column appeared, it had one primary function. To support the structure. Proper placement, material, and weight-bearing capabilities allowed the column to take the brunt of the gravitational force from all the other building components. And if you really think about it, a human life is not that different. Life can definitely get pretty heavy at times. Death, disease, disappointment, and well, just the daily grind of walking in this world can have one struggling to shoulder the burdens of their life. It brings about the obvious question, in this world what holds up your life? What are the columns in which you place your confidence?

Psalm 7 starts with David soundly and succinctly stating who God is in His life and what role God plays in that life daily. To David, God wasn’t merely a get out of jail free card. God wasn’t simply whom David prayed to in his “foxhole moments”, when life spiraled out of control. God wasn’t merely a cosmic slot machine that David played to get what he wanted. You see, King David, like all of us, had to make a decision with exactly who God was. Many in the world believe that God is an old white-bearded guy, riding a cloud in the sky, simply watching over the affairs of mankind. Others believe that God is a big traffic cop, just waiting for people to do wrong so He can zap them with a stiff lightning-bolt fine. Others believe that God is unreachable, a power so mighty that He has little to achieve in bothering with the human ants that scatter His planet. And even others believe that God doesn’t exist, that somehow the universe is under its own control, spinning and turning into an unknown infinity in haphazard random cycles. But David, David knew. He knew who God was, He understood what God was, and in God did David place His trust. For King David, he only had one majestic mighty column that supported his entire life…Almighty God.

Today, something is supporting your life, what is it? Is it yourself? For many years I walked this green earth relying solely upon myself. Our world tells us we are to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps and seize the day in order get what we want and deserve. But folks, I, as well as countless others, have derived that the column of self is woefully weak. Is your column other people? The columns of others are just as weak as the column of self. Is your column work, money, and the material things of this world? Anything that has been given can be taken away, not the blueprint upon which a solid structure should be built. For me, my single column is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Savior of the World, the Son of God, Jesus Christ. My column of self was falling and crumbling around me until I found the strength of Jesus. And since 23 years old, I have seen the column of Christ stand firm and unmovable under all circumstances. Today, if the columns of your life are everything but Jesus, your structure is in jeopardy. However the sin in your life will tell you differently. It will tell you that all columns are the same, but it is a lie. Admit that your imperfect sin separates you from a perfect God and that Jesus is the only way to eternal Salvation. Cry out to Jesus today to come into your life and be the perfect column that will support and strengthen. But not only will Jesus support your life, He will beautify your life just as a stoic Corinthian column beatifies the Roman Pantheon. For the life supported by Jesus and lived obediently to His call, will bear abundant fruit and be a beautiful life indeed. Today is the day, in whom will you trust to support your life?

“For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” 2 Chronicles 16:9
