The Flicker

Updated: May 13, 2022

Margie wrote this hours before we first encountered Lahaina Baptist Church and God altered our paths forever. We recently found it, after thinking it was lost.

Sunday, December 13, 2015. Early morning.

As I sit here in the quiet of the morning, listening to the waves of the Pacific rushing to the shore and retreating in silence, I feel the busyness of my mind being cleared like the motions of an eraser on an old chalkboard. The flicker of the light above my table is bothersome so I move out to the lanai to watch the sun rise over the ocean.

I’m staying as a guest at the Maui condo of the family I’ve worked for in the corporate world for 15 years. My husband and I flew in yesterday and were completely amazed as we entered their home; the intricate details and meticulous appointments of everything from the inlaid wood floors to the end tables carved top to bottom from one piece of marble. There is a surfboard hanging above me inscribed with lyrics of “Surfin’ USA”, signed by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Lyrics of Imagine hang in the entry way signed by John Lennon. Ironically, the beautiful hand made chandelier above where I sit flickers just like the one at my house. It reminds me man in his best efforts cannot compete with the glories of God as He lights the world around us. So, I turned out all the lights and I’m enjoying the beautiful sunrise.

The waves continue to rush in and out stirring memories of years past and evoking new challenges on the horizon. We put our home in Fort Worth, TX on the market the day before coming here to Hawai’i. The realtor, a sweet lady in her 70’s, said to us “You guys live a charmed life, do you ever have a bad day?” She is on to something. My husband, Dan and I have lived a charmed life. From an outsider looking in there may be the perception we live a perfect life. We are far from perfect, but we ask God to perfect his plan in our lives daily. Our home is on the market because we are following God’s plan for us as he reveals it, and so far, He has said go to Costa Rica and learn Spanish.

The challenges on the horizon are to sell everything we own, give up the “charmed life”, and move somewhere we’ve never even visited, as we continue to ask God to reveal why he is calling us to do these things. We have lived more than our fair share of the “good life” and are ready to share our experiences, strengths and hope in Christ with others to encourage them on their journey.

Perhaps there is a flicker in your life, too. Don’t ignore it. It may be God calling you to move out of your own light and into His glorious presence.

For with you is the fountain of life;

in your light do we see light.

Psalms 36:9
